My Instructional Design Journey

Let me tell you a story....Once upon a time there was tech-savvy teacher-librarian who had been educating young minds for more than twenty years. She loved her job, but she always felt she was capable of much more, of making an impact on a bigger scale. One day, she was performing her normal daily routines when suddenly her beloved school shutdown. Students and faculty where to learn at home due to an awful sickness sweeping the world.

While she was home, she wondered "What can I do to help my fellow teachers?" She knew that many of them were not proficient in technology and would struggle with teaching virtually in the fall. She continued to ponder what she could do to help. One day, it occurred to her - the best way to help her colleagues was to share all she had learned about best practices in online learning and practical applications to help with daily instruction. She quickly set up a course on her learning management system (Google Classroom) and invited any teachers in the county to join her on the journey. Soon, she had teachers from all across the county at different levels and subjects joining her. Together, they learned how to organize, plan, engage, differentiate, and evaluate. When school returned in the fall, they were ready!

For this teacher, she realized that she had found her calling. She loved working with adult learners to improve their instruction. She began to explore how she could keep going on this quest. That's when she discovered instructional design, and so my journey began.
